People are able to call each other, at first through a switchboard and later by dialing phone numbers.

Traditional voice communications on the telephone exchange, with major carriers maintaining copper wire and providing basic telephony service.  Imagine the railroads, but for voice.

If you’re home, you get the call.  If not, you miss it.  Many women sing sadly about “waiting by the phone”.
